Agentic commerce and payments continue to grow, and Meta has felt the need to join the market by partnering with PayPal to apply its new AI agent, Muse, to its checkout.
Meta’s newly-launched personal AI agent has partnered with PayPal to be used to assist consumers at the checkout.
Confirmed in a post on X by PayPal, Muse becomes the latest AI agent to support the consumer checkout experience after PayPal has already integrated OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol and Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol.
“We’re excited to partner with Meta to enable PayPal customers to seamlessly shop and check out using their Muse personal AI agents across PayPal merchants worldwide,” said PayPal in a statement on X.
Muse will work in the PayPal checkout backend to serve as an AI chatbot designed to assist in completing transactions and ask for approvals before confirmation.
What is Meta Muse’s role in financial services
On 8 September, Meta launched Muse to work on behalf of the user to become a personal AI agent, such as helping with completing transactions.
In a Meta brief, Muse works with Link – the one-click digital wallet designed by Stripe – to generate one-time-use cards so sensitive information can be stored securely and hidden.
The Big Tech firm labelled Muse as the “first AI agent” to use Link’s purchase protections to maintain information is stored and hidden, as well as free coverage for damaged or lost goods, price drops and no-fee returns.
Muse is powered by the Muse Secure VM model. This is a dedicated secure computer housing its own browser to work on a user’s behalf across multiple platforms, analysing conversations.
This enables the AI agent to make suggestions for commerce and during the shopping experience. This can be linked for a user’s behaviour on Meta-owned social media platforms, Facebook Instagram, etc. For example, a saved post or reel on these platforms displaying a recipe can be saved for future recommendations for Muse to suggest ingredients and a grocery list from the recipe.
Meta also confirmed in its Muse press release it will launch Shop Pay as another means of payment via its AI agent. Shop Pay works alongside 1Password to automate the login process before entering the checkout process.
