Corrections & Clarifications
Payment Expert corrects errors of fact promptly and openly. Accuracy is the basis of the trust our readers place in our reporting, and we treat every correction request seriously
This page explains how we handle mistakes, how to report one, and what you can expect once you do.
Report an error
Email corrections to [email protected]. Include the following so we can assess the request quickly:
- The article headline and URL.
- The specific sentence or claim you believe is wrong.
- The correct information.
- A source or evidence supporting the correction, where available.
Requests that identify the exact error and provide supporting evidence are actioned fastest.
What happens next
A member of the editorial team reviews every request. We check the claim against the original source material, contact the reporter, and verify the correct information before making any change.
We aim to respond within two working days. Verified errors are corrected as soon as the facts are confirmed. If we conclude the article is accurate as published, we will tell you and explain why.
How we mark changes
We distinguish between four types of change.
Correction
A factual error in the original article – a wrong name, figure, date, or statement. We fix the text and add a dated note at the foot of the article stating what was changed.
Clarification
The original text was accurate but open to misinterpretation, or omitted context that materially affects how it reads. We amend the wording and, where the change is significant, add a note explaining it.
Update
New developments after publication. We add the new information and, for substantive updates, mark the article as updated with a timestamp.
Silent change
Typographical fixes, broken links, and formatting errors that do not alter meaning are corrected without a note.
Corrections and clarifications carry a dated note so the record of the change is visible to readers. We do not delete published articles to resolve a complaint, and we do not alter the substance of a piece without recording that we have done so.
Quotes and right of reply
Sources who believe they have been misquoted should contact the corrections desk with the article URL and the quote in question. We check the quote against our recording, notes, or written correspondence before amending.
Organisations named in critical coverage who were not approached for comment before publication may request that their response be added. We assess each request against the original reporting.
Complaints
Readers who are not satisfied with how a correction request has been handled may escalate to the Editor.
Contact Louis Thompsett, News Editor, at [email protected].
Set out the article, the original request, and why you believe the response was inadequate. The Editor will review the matter independently of the reporter involved.
