Elon Musk has installed another value-added service to X in his bid to transform the social media app into a financial super app

X continues to grow beyond a standard social media app after it announced it will now support in-app live crypto and stock trade tracking.

Live trade tracking within X is performed under its Cashtag Partner Program, available to US users initially, which is performed by typing in tickers in the timeline such as $BTC to view live price charts, related posts and trading options.

X has partnered with cryptocurrency exchanges Coinbase, Gemini and Kraken to support crypto trading but not within the X app itself, but as a way to redirect to these exchange sites.

The social media company has also partnered with online stock trading firms Interactive Brokers and Moomoo as part of similar deals.

Cashtags have been a function on the social media site for the past several years but an update in January 2026 alluded to the arrival of the Cashtag Partner Program.

At the time, former X Head of Product Nikita Bier, emphasised the live crypto and stock trade tracking is not designed to introduce in-app trading and acting as a brokerage. Rather, the platform is supplying users with “financial data tools and links”.

In a recent post, Bier highlighted the primary use case for the Cashtag Partner Program, creating wider financial discussions while viewing live in-app crypto and stock trading options all via the social media platform.

“Glad to see this finally ship,” said Bier. “It was abundantly clear to me that basically every retail narrative starts on X—yet the insights were never directly actionable. This is just one small step in closing the gap.”

X continues to transform its social media origins

Live in-app crypto and stock trading follows on from the long-awaited launch of X Money; the in-app financial service embedded into the social media platform.

X Money is designed to serve instant peer-to-peer in-app transfers, up to 6% APY on balances, 3% cashback for eligible purchases with the X debit card, early direct deposits two days before payday – alongside free ATM withdrawals, wires and checks.

The in-app financial service has partnerships with Cross River Bank to support access to US payment rails like ACH and deposit taking, and with Visa Direct to perform peer-to-peer payments in-app.

X Money has also become the first social media platform to become a Federal Deposit Insurance Company (FDIC) insured banking service. The platform has also acquired several money transmitter licences in 41 US states.

It appears Elon Musk is drawing inspiration from WeChat’s evolution from a messaging and video calling app, to an all encompassing super app which supports payments, gaming and more.

In an episode of the Payment Expert Podcast, host Louis Thompsett, News Editor for Payment Expert, and Senior Business Journalists Callum Williams and Kieran O’Connor, discussed whether X Money will be a success or fail in its bid to redefine what it means to be a social media app.
