Klarna is now available to customers of Apple Pay when using the payment method at the checkout to access the buy now, pay later (BNPL) method.

The instalment-based payment method will be available to iPhone and iPad users operating on iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 or later, initially available for users in the UK and US at first, with a view to launch in Canada next.

Klarna will offer its pay later in three or four instalments once Apple Pay is selected by the customer at the checkout. The Swedish fintech states there is no added interest over long periods of time with 0% APR.

Klarna’s Pay in four payment offering gives consumers four fixed repayments for purchases between $35-$2,000, interest-free. Financing is available for higher ticket items with monthly repayments made over a longer period of time starting at 0% APR.

Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said: “We’re excited to give users in the US and UK more choice in how they pay with the addition of Klarna’s flexible payment options right at checkout on Apple Pay,”

“With this rollout, users have the option to pay for purchases over time, and they get to enjoy the seamless and secure experience of Apple Pay that they already know and love.”

To add Klarna’s payment offering to their iPhone or iPad, users have been directed to the ‘Other Cards & Pay Later Options’ when checking out on Apple Pay. Users can then select Klarna to access its products.

After terms and conditions are agreed, users can double-click the side button and authenticate themselves with Apple’s Face ID or Touch ID to confirm a purchase. Before the purchase is complete, Klarna makes a lending decision that has no effect on the user’s credit score.

With Klarna now fully integrated into Apple Pay, it increases its visibility and usage on one of the UK and US’ most popular payment methods.

This integration follows on from Klarna becoming an official reseller of Apple with the launch of ‘Apple from Klarna’, a storefront in the Klarna app that enables US customers to purchase Apple products using its BNPL payment methods.

Sebastian Siemiatkowski, Co-Founder and CEO of Klarna, added: “Consumers around the world have been asking for Klarna on Apple Pay, so I’m super proud to let them know it’s here!

“Our fair, flexible and interest-free payments options are now even easier to use at your favourite merchants when checking out on Apple Pay online and in apps in the US, UK and soon, Canada. This is a big step toward our mission to offer consumers Klarna at every checkout.”
