Airbnb renters in Ireland have received a new method of payment after the accommodation company struck a deal with fintech Klarna.

The new option is part of a wider planned roll-out to more than 20 countries that will offer a BNPL service for everyone looking to stay at a partnering  Airbnb accommodation.

Called Pay Over Time, the feature was first launched in North America as part of Airbnb’s 2023 Summer Release, which allows guests to apply for an interest-free instalment plan spread across two months.

Amanda Cupples, General Manager of Airbnb for Northern Europe, said: “We’re pleased to bring Pay Over Time with Klarna to Ireland, giving guests greater flexibility to spread their payments over a number of weeks or months. Whether you’re booking a solo trip, or organising a get together with friends, choosing the right payment plan has just become a lot easier.”

The new payment method can be used at checkout next to the option to pay for the reservation in full. Airbnb guests in Ireland can use Pay Over Time for all reservations priced between €35 and €1,500

Colin Creagh, Head of Klarna, Ireland, added: “Airbnb tells us that one of the top requests from their guests is more ways to pay for their stays. We’re thrilled to bring Klarna’s flexible payment options to Airbnb guests around the globe.”

Available in Ireland, Pay Over Time can also be used across Europe in the Czech Republic, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain, with more countries expected to accommodate the launch later this year.
