Worldpay becomes first acquirer to enable Amazon Pay

American-based payment processing firm Worldpay Inc. have announced it has begun a partnership with technology and e-commerce giants Amazon.

The deal makes Worldpay the first acquirer enabling Amazon Pay for its merchants with the aim to provide “an expedited, consistent and seamless online checkout experience.”

Through this relationship, Worldpay merchants that accept payments in the United States can utilise Amazon Pay for payments.

Merchants can now integrate and add Amazon Pay to their website, with Worldpay acting as both their gateway provider and acquirer.

“At Amazon, we are continuously looking for ways to invent and simplify on behalf of our customers,” says Patrick Gauthier, Vice President, Amazon Pay.

“Working with Worldpay will make it easier for merchants to grow their business by providing customers with a familiar and trusted experience throughout the shopping journey.”

In the announcement, Worldpay stated this move further emphasises their ambition to make it easier for its merchants to manage their business by centralising all their payment methods into one place.

Amazon Pay, launched in 2007, provides customers the opportunity to pick from addresses and payment options already on file, reducing checkout friction by auto-filling fields.

Asif Ramji, Chief Product and Marketing Officer at Worldpay alluded to the pace and growth of consumer adoption in terms of digital payments and the fact that merchants need to keep pace with demand.

He commented: “By teaming up with Amazon, we have an even stronger capacity to enable digital commerce, streamline the checkout experience and drive frictionless payments for our merchants.”

“At Worldpay it’s our responsibility to make it quick and easy for our merchants to add new payment options, and enable their customers to pay in the way they want to.”

This significant partnership comes in the same week that Worldpay were purchased by FIS in a record breaking deal.
