Global cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has secured regulatory approval in Argentina to significantly expand its reach across the country.

Receiving Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) registration from Argentina’s National Securities Commission (CNV), this enables Coinbase to operate within the country’s legal framework for virtual assets.

The crypto exchange revealed it now plans to gradually roll out its products to crypto investors in Argentina over the coming months. The regulatory clearance will also allow Coinbase to offer localised services in Spanish and incorporate local payment methods to ensure a smooth user experience.

Fabio Plein, Director for the Americas at Coinbase, commented on the VASP licence, stating: “Economic freedom is a cornerstone of prosperity, and we are proud to bring secure, transparent, and reliable crypto services to Argentina.

“For many Argentinians, crypto isn’t just an investment, it’s a necessity for regaining control over their financial futures.”

Milei’s crypto ‘economic freedom’

As Plein mentioned, Argentina has been rapidly growing its crypto market under the leadership of President Javier Milei

Since coming into office in November 2023, Milei has undergone shock therapy to the country’s economy, with one of his primary policies opening up new adoption avenues for crypto and digital assets.

After his controversial economic policies, Milei’s crypto-positive stance has seemingly paid off for now. By the end of 2025, 11 million Argentinians are expected to own some form of cryptocurrency – 24% of the population – according to Statista

This burgeoning crypto market appears to be the right time for Coinbase to expand its services and has enlisted Matías Alberti to serve as its Head of Operations in Argentina. Alberti has experience in fintech and will lend his expertise to expand Coinbase’s presence for future successes.

“Matías brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the local market. We’re confident in his leadership as we work to bring crypto services to millions of Argentinians,” said Plein on Alberti’s appointment.

Aligning with President Milei’s ‘economic freedom’ stance when it comes to crypto, Coinbase will promote its services in order to serve the same mission.

Essential to fulfilling this is to provide Argentine crypto users with a secure and compliant platform that gives ease-of-mind to investors in a market that is notoriously associated with volatility.

Coinbase’s VASP registration is the first step in ensuring it is regulatory compliant and a trusted platform to buy, sell and trade preferred cryptocurrencies.

“Security and trust are at the core of Coinbase,” added Plein. “We are committed to offering Argentinians a platform that meets the highest industry standards while ensuring ease of use.

“Our educational initiatives will equip Argentinians with the knowledge and confidence they need to navigate the opportunities and challenges of the crypto ecosystem.”
