Apple’s merchant payment terminal Tap to Pay on iPhone will expand into several new European countries with the help of payment acquirer Viva.com.

Alongside Viva.com, Adyen and SumUp will also provide Tap to Pay to all five new European countries; Austria, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Romania and Sweden.

With Tap to Pay on iPhone, the payment terminal is accessible for businesses of all sizes to accept contactless payments from credit and debit cards, ranging from American Express, Mastercard and Visa cards, as well as Apple Pay and other digital wallets.

Merchants can download the Tap to pay partner iOS app without the need of integrating additional hardware, with the aim of making the transaction process as smooth as possible for both merchant and customer.

With Adyen, SumUp and Viva.com supporting the expansion in all five countries, Global Payments with Erste Bank will also help provide Tap to Pay in Austria, Czech Republic and Romania, as well as Stripe in Austria, Czech Republic, Ireland and Sweden.

Nexi will also help integrate Tap to Pay in Austria and Sweden, Revolut in Austria and Ireland, myPOS and PAYONE in Austria, and Zettle by PayPal in Sweden, to name a few.

For Viva.com, this latest expansion complements its wider efforts to further usage of Tap to Pay in numerous countries where it already has a presence.

The payment acquirer has already helped launch the contactless Apple payment solution in the UK, France, Germany and more recently, Italy. Viva.com has so far launched Tap to Pay in 24 markets.

Harry Xenophontos, Chief Partnerships Officer at Viva.com, said: “Seeing the innovation of Tap to Pay on iPhone with Viva.com’s Terminal app unfold across Europe is truly exciting.

“This breakthrough solution expands the coverage of our technology capabilities that surpasses the limitations of traditional card terminals. Merchants can now use Viva.com’s minute-long digital onboarding process and start accepting payments using only an iPhone.

“It doesn’t get any simpler than that, and we’re proud to be at the forefront of this revolutionising payment experience.”

Moving forward, Apple states it will work closely with leading payment platforms and app developers to further extend its offering of Tap to Pay.

The tech giant ensured that privacy will remain a fundamental priority for the contactless payment solution, with all customers’ payment data protected by the same technology as Apple Pay’s.
