European fintech Mollie has appointed Dave Smallwood as UK Managing Director to support its expanding UK operations after significant growth in early 2024.

As the new Managing Director, Smallwood will leverage his two decades of fintech experience at companies like American Express, PayPal and Super Payments to drive the company’s goal of becoming the leading financial service provider for UK small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs).

The Dutch-based company has partnered with numerous UK SMBs, including Gymshark, Soak&Sleep, Mazda and Wild Cosmetics, offering payment solutions, money management and accessible financing through its Mollie platform.

Mollie has launched a range of products and services in the UK, including Mollie Connect, which allows SaaS platforms and marketplaces to accept payments, onboard users and manage funds; Mollie Invoicing, enabling customers to send invoices with a payment link directly from the dashboard for quicker payments; and Mollie Capital, offering fast working capital solutions with minimal paperwork for merchants.

In line with these new services, the company has also increased its workforce in the country. Mollie has stated that its team has grown by over 60%, from 16 to 26 people across London and the UK since 2023.

Smallwood said: “The UK boasts Europe’s largest e-commerce market, yet business owners continue to be underserved in the payments sector due to excessive financial bureaucracy and inadequate support.

“At Mollie, we’re committed to changing this narrative. Our goal is to empower UK businesses with cutting-edge financial tools and unparalleled support, allowing them to focus on what truly matters – serving their customers and growing their businesses in an increasingly digital world.”

This focus on expanding into the UK follows positive numbers in its 2023 financial results, published in April. The reported net revenue of €99m, a growth of 36% compared to 2022, attributing the success to attracting larger customers and launching the aforementioned services.
