GamCare has announced the appointment of Mark Weiss as Deputy CEO to help raise the charity’s profile and provide strategic leadership.

The new Deputy CEO will take on the role alongside his current position as Director of Communications and External Affairs, with Weiss originally joining GamCare in May 2022.

Prior to working at the gambling support charity, the new Deputy CEO spearheaded all aspects of Policy and Public Affairs for the UK’s largest hospital speciality, anaesthesia, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Another previous role held by Weiss saw him work across the Policy and External Affairs function at the UK Faculty of Public Health for over seven years, where he helped to secure a number of significant and high-profile legislative changes and policy commitments.

Weiss commented: “I am delighted to take on the role of Deputy CEO. Since joining in 2022 I have seen first-hand the incredible impact that GamCare’s essential services have had in supporting people to recover from gambling harm – and in preventing those harms.”

Since joining GamCare, Weiss has been “instrumental” in driving forward the charity’s external engagement and communications programme and has also overseen delivery of GamCare’s response to the government’s landmark Gambling White Paper, which highlighted the views of the charity’s Lived Experience Community on how the Government could help make gambling safer.

In December, GamCare published comments on a proposed statutory levy in UK gambling in hopes of bringing a “generational shift”. A mandatory levy for gambling harm research, education and training (RET) is a flagship measure of the UK government’s Gambling Act review White Paper.

Weiss added: “As we now work through this transitional period in the future of research, prevention, and treatment, I look forward to working in close collaboration with our third sector partners, with GambleAware, the NHS, and with the Government as, together, we build the next chapter of gambling support in Britain.”

As Deputy CEO, Weiss will work closely under the leadership of Margot Daly, Executive Chair of GamStop, providing strategic leadership and direction across GamCare’s services and will also act as an ambassador for GamCare, raising its profile, and that of its community.

Daly remarked: “I am pleased to welcome Mark as the charity’s new Deputy CEO. His first-hand appreciation of the profound positive impact of GamCare’s treatment services and prevention programmes underscores his commitment to the tens of thousands of people who use our services every year.

“As GamCare navigates the evolving landscape, Mark’s collaborative and evidenced-based approach will be instrumental in driving forward GamCare’s core mission to help those affected by gambling-related harm, and to prevent further harm from emerging.”
